Not bad. But god damn did they pull an Audi and screw up in the worst place.
They stuck a god damn iPad or android-e quivalent dead center!
This is a cool pic tho. Not often does Ford do generational pics, I feel.

At least it isn't on all the trims, jalopnik said it's only on the platinum. Otherwise I'm excited for it, RWD/AWD with some pretty powerful engines and I for one really like the slightly updated looks. Gib

Looks like Ford bolted an Ipad to the dash last minute after they saw the RAM dash.
I can just see a Ford executive freaking out after seeing that huge screen on the RAM, making a quick call to the Explorer team lead saying “we need a giant screen on that thing.... I don’t care if you have already completed the dash design, go to an Apple store and get some tablets!”

That screen is terrible, and I hate the tacked-on fad that designers are in right now. I also prefer the slightly larger headlight units of the current gen over the narrow ones but otherwise it’s fine on the outside.

I think it’s funny they left out the first version of the D3 Explorer, you know, the ugly-ass one.
While Jalops hate the iPad infothing, the general population thinks it’s cool looking and attractive. It’ll sell in spades because of that.

My wife currently drives a Gen III ‘02 Explorer. A pretty base model, V-6 and RWD, but with leather seats (?). We had a ‘99 Exploder, which lived up to it’s name, by blowing it’s head gasket. I’d love to get something a bit smaller and more MPG friendly, but I’m afraid she is smitten by the “Big Truck” seating position. I’m happy gas is currently less than $2.00 a gallon at the moment.

Funny to make fun of it, but a s Epic Failure mentioned in another post, this was probably done on purpose for best utilization of space, but aesthetically, it could have been done better.

That generational pic is missing the early-2000s Explorer but I guess it’s more of a face- lif t (better looking than the 90s , IMO) than an actual generation.

Much much better. If my mother wants a 2020 when her lease is up, that better be on the XLT.

Ford, like most American car companies, has to be very careful about what models they select for a generational picture. Generally, pickup trucks and SUVs are safe, as are most sports cars/sports coupes (but there’s at least one Mustang that Ford doesn’t want shown); but they really can’t do it for most of their passenger car lines.
It isn’t like the Germans or the Japanese, who can proudly show 30-40 years of evolution of the same model line without fear of reminding customers of some brand damaging crapbox from the past.

It all got a little weird at the end of the second generation. The picture you posted is still a second gen. It is the 2001-2003 Explorer Sport. This was the second facelift of the 2nd-generation 3-door. (The first facelift was in 1998 when the 5-door and 3-door were facelifted together.) The front matches the pickup version (Explorer Sport Trac - they were trying to link them with styling and use of the “Sport” moniker) that was introduced alongside it in 2001. The 5-door kept the old styling for 2001 for one year until the third generation came along in 2002. There was no 3-door 3rd gen. Instead they sold the second-gen with the styling you posted through 2003 when the 3-door went away. Oddly, the pickup continued on the 2nd generation chassis with the same styling through the entire 3rd generation 5-door run. In 2006 the new pickup came out with the 4th generation chassis and styling bringing the body styles back in line. When the 5th generation came out the both the pickup and 5-door 4th generation went away together. (Although Ford being Ford has decided to make a mess again by bringing out this new 6th gen Explorer 5-door the same year as a new pickup but this time the pickup chassis and styling match a 5-door SUV we don’t even get in the US and instead of calling it the Everest Sport Trac which would make sense they are calling it the Ranger SuperCrew and also offering a squished version called the SuperCab so I guess in a roundabout way the Ranger SuperCab is the spiritual successsor the 2001-03 Explorer Sport that you posted.)

It was an oddball. See above.
